Tinnitus is the name given to the perception of sound heard only by the individual in the absence of external sound stimulus . It can present itself as a periodic tinnitus or sensorineural the latter being the most common. The sensorineural tinnitus can be continuous or intermittent , mono or polytonal , high or low frequency and is often referred to as hiss , whistle , wind , sea wave , etc. The onset of tinnitus is often linked to exposure to loud sounds , which may cause damage to the sensory cells of the inner ear . It has also been associated with the presence of excessive ear wax , infections , high blood pressure, aging and sensory nerve disorders. Activities that can cause tinnitus include drinking alcohol or caffeine , to the take of aspirin or antibiotics and smoking cigarettes.
If you have or suspect you have tinnitus, your hearing should be evaluated to determine what options are available to control it. If it is determined that there is no specific medical problems involved, there are several options to consider. In most cases, a person with tinnitus also has an associated hearing loss. The use of a hearing aid, to amplify the sounds around you, can help cover up the tinnitus and make it less annoying. Other available devices generate sounds to help mask tinnitus.
